Get Your Pom-Poms Ready

Be a cheerleader for your friends and families dreams

My sister and I had just finished our Orangetheory Fitness class. We were at one of our favorite local restaurants eating breakfast. Our server, Brandon, made a way where I didn’t think there would be a way for me to get a half portion of my favorite salad, in addition to a pumpkin pancake and breakfast taco, of course. I was thrilled!

We started talking to Brandon and getting into his world. I asked him, “What is your dream?” His dream was to finish graduate school and become a family counselor. Then Brandon asked me what my dream was. With confidence, I said, “my dream is to be married to a man who is Christian leader. Our purpose is to have fun as a team developing leaders and making a difference in the kingdom of God.” Brandon replied, “That is a very righteous and noble dream.” I said, “thank you,” with a huge smile.

I was pleasantly surprised by Brandon’s question and response. I don’t have many people ask me what my dream is. Maybe because I don’t ever remember not having a purpose filled marriage as my dream. I’m not ashamed of my dream. I have moments, sometimes seasons, of disappointment, discouragement, and questioning why God hasn’t made my dream come true, YET! I also know that God isn’t holding back from me. He loves me and wants the best for me. So I wait on God, with intention, with hope, and with purpose.

There have been some rare times when I have shared my dream of marriage and get the response, “well enjoy your season of singleness.” I never understood that response. I’ve been single for 46 of my 49 years of life. I enjoy life, period! I’m a cheerleader for my friends and family and their dreams no questions asked. I want to challenge and encourage you, when someone shares their dream, respond in a way of a cheerleader. Cheer, celebrate, support, pray, and ask “how can I help your dream come true?” Sometimes just listening will do the trick.

Reflection

  1. What is your dream?

  2. Have you ever had a surprising or disappointing reaction when you’ve shared your dream? How did you deal with it?

  3. Do you question why your dream hasn’t come true, YET? Have an honest conversation with God about it. Don’t hold back!

Goals

List the people in your life that cheer, support, and pray for you and your dream? Send them a thank you note.

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life.
